Transformation

THE DAY. From the mind of Joni through the hands of Addie Swi-Fly.

6:39 - Woke up. I was tired but I was excited for the day and my devotional.

6:43 - I took a shower to wake up.

6:53 - Went for a walk around the courtyard around the hotel. I felt nervous about leading devotionals, so I listened to music and tried to collect my thoughts.

7:15 - Gave devotional. Romans 12:17 - forgiveness and sacrificing ourselves to live as Jesus.

7:49 - Loaded up in the big red van "Toyota."

8:10 - Arrived at Cordero's house for breakfast. I was so excited about the "Guatemalan Experience" which consisted of "empanadas" [bean filled toritillas] and "tomales" [meat filled corn bread] and coffee.

8:55 - Cortnea and I left for the high school. I was nervous about teaching the STEP, because I knew how hard it would be and I really wanted them to get it for their competition.

9:00-11:00 - Arrived at high school and met the team. (Aesdeao) And taught the team along with my faithful friend Cortnea Ralston. They picked up on the STEP extremely quick. I was surprised and proud of the girls, I could tell they really wanted to learn it and it was fun teaching them. At the very end, the team showed their appreciation by buying us bags of water.

11:05 - No sight of scheduled transportation.

11:30 - Cortnea, Karin [Guatemalan translator from church], and I walked to the bus station and waited on three different buses because of their load. (I was apprehensive about public transportation in a bustling unknown city. It was one quetzel each, we sat at the very back and communicated with a man from Guatemala who spoke French - Go Figure!)

11:38 - We met up with the rest of the team at the house we were painting.

11:42 - Started painting purple trim on the house.

1:57 - Stopped painting for a lunch break (Jelly and Ham...mmmm...my favorite!)

2:19 - Went back to painting.

3:22 - Paused for a short break of soccer, what else? It was raining, so the painting had to stop for a short time!

4:01 - Returned to painting, rain or shine, this house had to be painted. We worked on the front of the house till 9pm. Note to bloggers: DO NOT ADD WATER TO PAINT. During this time, we fixed up things in the house, when we were waiting on paint.

Later - Paint arrives! We are able to finish the painting. Git'R'Done! I felt accomplished for the family's sake. We gave the family something to be proud of. We had a touching prayer of dedication for the family when we were finished. We had our own Extreme Make-over Home Edition with our own host Wes Cates (Ty), we were able to say "MOVE THAT BUS!" It was so much fun!

Even later - when back to the Cordero's house for supper - bbq chicken, mashed potatoes and two cups of coffee.

It was a great day! Please keep us in your prayers as we experience the last days of our mission trip!

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Today was a huge day for our team! It seemed like two days all in one! We started at 6:15 with our regular morning devotions in which we talked about the passage Matthew 7:21-23 and Philippians 3:10. We talked about how we as Christians should not just talk the talk but walk the walk and that can be hard to do. We also talked about how much we want to know who Christ is and that takes effort. We have to read the Word and seek the Lord. All in all it was a great start to our day even though it was so early.

After our morning devotions we headed to the Cordero's, our contacts, and had another wonderful breakfast with eggs, beans, rolls, and oatmeal. After breakfast, our group split up and went to two different schools. Erica, Wes, Chris, and Joni all went to the "elementary" school where Chris and Joni gave their testimonies. I say elementary, because it was supposed to be elementary but there was a range from 5 to 16 year olds in the school. Laura, David, Addie, Brittany (GI contact), Faith, Dr. Best, Cortnea, Jason, and myself all went to the medical university. While at the university, we did our sin skit, our new image of God skit that Brittany taught us, and Laura, David, Addie, and myself all gave our testimonies, one testimony in every classroom that we visited. After the fourth classroom, there was an hour break before the next classes started so we all hung out in the in the little courtyard they had, getting hydrated and snacking! During that break, everyone who went to the elementary school came back to join us and we had our full team again. We visited two more classrooms and Joni and Wes gave their testimonies. We reached a ton of people just within that university! It was such a great feeling!

Our next item on the agenda was stopping by the supermarket to get food for lunch. Jane, our contact, asked if anyone wanted to go in with her because it had AIR CONDITIONING!! All the girls went and it felt wonderful. I could have stayed in their all day!! We then headed back to the Cordero's house for lunch where we had ham sandwiches and chips. We were all exhausted after we ate that about three-fourths of our team took about an hour and half nap at the house. We were definitely well rested and ready for our next school.

Next, we went to our last school for the day where we put on a similar program for the students like we did the past couple of days. We sang songs, did our skits, showed off our talents, Erica gave her testimony, and Dr. Best gave a message. It was cool to see how the Lord worked through them. If don't know, Dr. Best is Erica's grandpa and the stories that they told correlated. It was awesome to see and experience!

After we finished our program, we headed to the church where we began sorting and bagging the food we are going to take to the mountain villages on Thursday and Friday! The youth group was also there helping us. At our debriefing, the general consensus was that everyone did their part. Individuals worked on their own task knowing and working toward the big goal in the end. It was such a great feeling when we got it all done and to reward ourselves, we had potato sack races. It was so much fun and the best part was that I won one of them. Okay, not really, but it was a great way to end the day with all of our hard work.

We then headed to the Cordero's house one last time for dinner where we had a roast type of meat with potatoes, rice, and salad. It was awesome! After we finished eating we all hung out together. We had a great day and there is no better way to end the day than to fellowship with one another. We reached a lot of lives today and the best part was that it was all for God's glory!

Thanks for reading,
April Burns

P.S. Mom and Dad I love you and miss you so much! I cant wait to see you in a week and tell you all the stories that I have. Have a wonderful day!

June 7th

Today was a wonderful day full of God's blessings. We started the day around 7:15 when we woke up and had our devotional. I led the devotional today and it was over the verse 2 Corinthians 4:8. The verse is "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you." This verse was really important to me because we should always remember that even when we are frustrated or tired or worn out and feel like we can't go on, it's important that we all are united and that we remember that nothing is too much to handle with the help of God.
We started the day thinking we would be having breakfast at our contacts house, but when we arrived we were told to get back in the van because there was no time for breakfast. We arrived at a technological charter school that consisted of mostly young men. We had the responsibility of leading an hour long presentation. We sang a few songs and Jason gave his testimony about what it is to be a developing Christian man. I felt like his testimony was really effective for the young men because it is important for them to understand what it is to be man and what it is to live up to the Lord's expectations verses the world's. After this we went and had a breakfast of eggs and pineapple cinnamon rolls. Our contact Jane always cooks us the best and most nourishing meals.
We then got in the van and headed over to the church to do some decorating. We colored and cut out lots of drawings for the nursery. It was awesome to see how all of us were able to use our talents to glorify God. We really enjoyed listening to the Sterling College Praise CD and singing along. The Guatemalan's at the church also really enjoyed the music as well so it was awesome that we could spread our music to another country.
After this we went to a college and gave another presentation in which Wes,Addie, and Cortnea gave their testimonies. They really touched a lot of people and it meant a lot when one of the teachers said after wards that she knew we had saved at least 85% of the kids at that school.
After wards a girl walked up to us and introduced herself. She is a US citizen who was born to illegal immigrants in Boston. They moved back to Guatemala when she was eight and she is now fifteen. She told us how she was told a few years ago that she had a brain tumor. She ended up having surgery but in the middle of the surgery she began to bleed a lot and they were only able to remove half of the tumor. She prayed and felt very close to God throughout her illness. One night she had a dream in which Christ told her "Your faith has saved you." Two weeks later when she went to the doctor the doctor told her that she had been given a miracle. There was no sign of her tumor and she seemed to be completely healed. After her sickness she began to feel disconnected from God. She expressed to us her desperate longing for a close relationship. She felt that no matter what she couldn't have the intimate relationship with Christ that she once did. We prayed over her and asked God to bless her and prosper her. This was a very emotional experience for not only the girl, but many of our team members.
After this we worked again at the church where Erica and I started painting a mural on a wall while the rest of the group worked cutting out and coloring a border for the nursery. We then went to the Pastor's house for a wonderful spaghetti meal and fellowship. Wes enjoyed playing with the children and lighting off fire works while the rest of the group sat on the roof enjoying the breeze and the company of each other.
Overall this day was amazing. I can't wait to see the way that the Lord will bless us in the following days and the ways he will help us touch the people in this country and each other. Thank you for all of the prayers and thoughts!! --- Laura Allen

Hola

Today was a wonderful day filled with the Holy Spirit. Today the team woke up about 7:00 and started are day with our regular devotions. We talk about how when we are in situations that might be uncomfortable or hard that the Lord will come to us when we need him the most. Also in the morning some of our team mates were not feeling so well so we put our hands over them and prayed that the Holy Spirit would come and heal there sickness. Some stayed behind to tend to the sick, while the rest of the team went to breakfast at Nancy's house who is one of the youth we work with from day to day. At breakfast we were served a traditional Honduras meal that consisted of beans, eggs, and cheese all wrapped in a flour tortilla.... SO TASTY!

Then the team went to the main church in Chiquimula, from there the team split into two groups. One group stayed at the church in Chiquimula and the second group went to another church in San Juan which is a small village not to far from Chiquimula. The group at the San Juan location went in the streets inviting people to come and join them for service. The team also prayed for people in the village in their homes. The church service in San Juan was great, they sang worships songs in spanish and in english, which sounded beautiful. After worship the children where taken to participate in children's church where the kids did various activities centering on God and his love for us. The older kids who were left got to listen to a few testimonies from our team, which went great. When we got done with our testimonies we prayed for the kids and one child even asked to have Jesus in his life, which was awesome.

The team back in Chiquimula had a really good time, they started out with praise and worship, and the group immediately felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. When praise and worship ended the group took the children to the playground about a block away, while at the playground the kids where taught a bible verse and played a couple games. Back at the church in Chiquimula our own team leader Dr. Best was given the opportunity to give a message about healing and how through prayer God can produce many things. After both services where finished we went back to our hotel and one of our team members who had been felling sick was a lot better, we knew God had touched and healed her. Then as a whole team we went to one of Pastor Hoses friends house for a delicious meal of chicken, mash potatoes, and avocado... yummy!

We left the house and headed back to the hotel for some much needed relaxation. We even picked and coconut and drank the juice inside. Some enjoyed it some not so much but it was a fun experience to say the least. The night came and with it rain, thunder and lightning which made for a great storm. Later on we sat around and fellowship and had some good old fashioned tasty hot dogs. In all today was a great day and there are many more to come.

Keep us in your prayers
-Christopher

Saturday, June 5

HOLA!!

Thank you for following our blog here in BEAUTIFUL and HOT Guatemala. Today was an amazing day for everyone. Our day started off by meeting for breakfast of a familiar meal, pancakes, scrambled eggs, and corn starch pudding. YUM YUM!! We are definitely not going hungry down here. Pastora Jane takes good care of us like she does her own children.

Our first duty of the day was to clean, organize, and do some chores around the church in Chiquimula. Everyone was assigned different jobs to complete. It is so nice to know we can rely on each other to complete one goal as a team. We all miss everyone back home a lot, but we are truly becoming a family in Guatemala. The guys helped hang some tarps and made a new friend in the process the were are very thankful for and the girls cleaned and organized the church. Language barriers make it tough to communicate but we are all learning to communicate other ways and improving our Spanish too. We have some amazing (and strong) men that act as body guards are make sure all of us girls are taken care of, and you can always depend on the girls to make you smile. I am so blessed to have this wonderful group of people to work with in this country.

For lunch it was a taste of home, a good ole' sandwich, watermelon, and chips. It hits the spot after a few hot hours. Our lunch hour was cut short because we needed to head out to a village that had never been visited before. The ride wasn't long, but in a few miles Guatemala's beauty was revealed. The landscape is astonishing. Some people worked with youth from the church, while the rest crossed a rickety old bridge to reach a river. It was here we all lifted prayer up for the people of the village. Everyone was moved by the atmosphere. After we prayed and sang a few songs it was time for us to split up again. Three people went to teach an English class and the rest of the team entertained the community. There was joy and hope found in participating in pick up soccer games. Both groups were very thankful the experience.

Our day ended much sooner than it has been the past few nights. Our food for dinner was delicious too! We had chicken, vegetables, rice, watermelon, and salad. These people feed us well!! One thing our whole group agrees on is how amazing meal time is together. This is where we are able to really come together and bond.

We are all learning a lot about ourselves, one another, leadership, and how God plays a role in our lives. Thank you for all of your support, prayers, and following us online. Please continue to pray for us.

Day Tres!

There is nothing better than to wake up in Guatemala, having the assurance you have been called to this place for a reason. Today, our team's eyes were opened to some of those reasons.

We had a great day. It started off with our devotionals and breakfast at our contacts house (Hoses and Jane). In our devotional, I picked some key points from the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 to share with the group. One of the points that I left the team with is the disciples feeling inadequate to provide for all the people. When the disciples came back to Jesus, He multiplied what they had, and blessed many people. I found this to be true all day.

Shortly after breakfast, our contacts described in some detail their calling in Guatemala. It entailed the sacrifices they had made to live here and be witnesses for Christ in this city of Chiquimula. It was inspiring for us all, thus I cannot promise any parent their child will return unchanged.

Around 10:30am, we loaded up the big red van and headed to a supply store (it was a future teacher's dream store - pencils and paper, pens and poster board of every size, shape and color) to prepare for the day. We headed to a church outside of town into the mountains a bit. Our goal was to liven the place up with some cleaning and decorating.
Our team was split into different groups according to our abilities and interests. A handful of us went to play soccer with what started as a group of three that soon turned into almost a dozen kids playing soccer at the main arena in town. They had a blast and were able to encourage the kids and even the grounds keeper, even with a language barrier. I am constantly impressed with this team overcoming the inability to verbally communicate, but using laughter and a smile to communicate so much more.

Others like myself, who love cleaning, found ourselves with a broom or a scrubber in hand getting to work on floors or the bathroom. We discussed in our debrief tonight that we won't always see the ripple effect of something so small, but it has the potential to bless many people! There were several boys that came back to the church after a sweaty game of soccer to hang out. Wes, a fellow team member has been given many opportunities to use his Spanish skills. It was neat to see the team in so many ways, serving the Lord.

The third group (in which we all ended up) were given the vision of Noah's Ark. We drew, colored, cut and pasted animals and an ark on a wall in the children's part of the church. During this time, we were able talk and discuss about the night's activities, which we knew included a... TALENT SHOW!! We each needed a talent to show to an audience of about 35 people. It was a blast to put together skits and stomps, beat boxes and strength contests. We were also able to hear some beautiful solos from our team and others in the Guatemalan youth group. As it turned out, doing this talent show really prepared us for the future schools we will be heading into next week.

The night ended with chocolate covered frozen treats! We were able to pick from bananas, strawberries, and pineapples with a variety of toppings for them. It was delicious! If you were concerned at all, at anytime about our eating - don't be. The food is excellent!

Thanks so much for reading and staying up to date with our blog. Hopefully, we can post some pictures soon! Continue to pray for our team and the work we will be doing here. May God be glorified in the things we say and do. A prayer of mine, since the beginning is that we would look different from the world. That we would be known by our love that comes from the Father.

Many blessings to you,
Addie Swihart

The Longest Day (So Far)

Light crept into our Hotel Puerto Bus at just after 5:00 am waking the light-sensitive Sterling Guatemala Team. But were were in San Salvador, El Salvador! A twice-delayed flight from Houston brought us into this hilly capital city late enough to put us in the bus station hotel. This morning brought excitement and a free breakfast, (sure beats Motel 8!) which fortified us for the five-hour drive north into Chiquimula, Guatemala, our base of ministry for the next week and a half.

After another meal, this time at 2:30 pm, we got a chance to better meet our hosts, Rev. Hoseas and Jane Cordero, pastors of La Autentica Iglesia de la Palabra de Vida. The Authentic Word of Life Church. These dedicated and hardworking people and their three children quickly captured our hearts.

Our ministry began in earnest when we met the "Youth" Group of twenty to thirty-year-olds. After some brief games so we could get to know each other, we divided into four teams and went up and down the narrow streets handing out invitation cards for the upcoming Sunday services. Despite the language barrier, we were able to show kindness and followed the lead of our co-workers.

We finished off the day at 9:00 pm with yet another meal, this time salchichas (hot dogs)at our host families upstairs apartment. It was a long, but positive day and we knew God has prepared our way to serve.

All for today!
DB (Dr. Best)
